Olympiacos through to Challenge Cup quarterfinals after dramatic tiebreak win

Piraeus, Greece, February 7, 2017. Olympiacos PIRAEUS of Greece secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women after rallying to a 3-2 home victory (19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14, 16-14) over Turkey’s Çanakkale Bld. Two weeks ago Olympiacos had won the first matchup in Turkey by the same score and on Tuesday night the ‘Reds’ were able to edge past their strong opponents after coming back twice from one set down.

The support of the home fans was instrumental to this comeback as Olympiacos achieved a second 3-2 victory in as many matches with the winners of the 2016 BVA Cup. Olympiacos achieved a come-from-behind victory by storming back from 12-14 down in the fifth set to seize a dramatic win at 16-14. The German-born opposite hitter of Olympiacos, Saskia Hippe top scored in the end with 21 points. Middle blocker Aikaterina Giota added 16 points, including six blocks, with Nadzeya Malasai contributing with 15 (including five aces) to the final tally of Olympiacos.

In the next round of the competition, Olympiacos will play Belgium’s Asterix Avo BEVEREN for a spot in the semis, with the first match to be played in Belgium in late February before the remake takes place in Greece in early March.
