Dominant Barleti Volley retain their crown in Albania women’s national league

Tirana, Albania, April 22, 2017. Barleti Volley claimed the 2016-2017 edition of the Albanian women’s national league after sweeping three matches in a row in the championship series with Partizani, thus retaining the crown they had seized last year. Barleti Volley truly deserved this honour after dominating throughout the entire domestic season, losing only one match to Tirana in the semis. Although many players had left the team at the end of the 2015-2016 season, those who joined the ranks of Barleti Volley for the 2016-2017 campaign did a great job – despite their young age.

Barleti Volley won three matches in a row in the championship series (3-0, 3-1 and 3-1 the results), so that no fourth and fifth round was to be played. They imposed their quality in all matches where Partizani made some easy mistakes especially towards the end of each set. Even though Partizani fought until the end, they could only take one set in three matches and never posed a real threat to the defending champions. All matches of this ‘capital derby’ enjoyed live coverage on TV and many fans joined in the arena to cheer on their favourite team.

“We are very happy with this triumph, which was not easy to reach but in the end we deserved this title,” said the head coach of Barleti Volley, Hasan Gurabardhi. “I want to thank the players, the fans and everyone at the club.”

The semis and finals of this year’s national league coincided with the historic introduction of the electronic score sheet by the Albanian Volleyball Federation in an effort to develop and modernise the game as per the latest international standards.
