Teams from Brčko sweep top honours at Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national cup finals

Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, March 13, 2017. Two teams from the city of Brčko – ZOK Bimal-Jedinstvo and OK Mladost – claimed this past weekend the top honours at the finals of this year’s national cup organised by the Volleyball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina with prize money - € 1,000 – awarded to the eventual winners in each gender.

The local organisers provided perfect conditions for a smooth running of the event with as many as 3,000 fans in total following the matches. Many media – including TV, radio stations, Internet portals and newspapers – extensively reported on the event successfully held at the Magnet sports hall in the city of Brčko.

In the women’s competition, ZOK Bimal-Jedinstvo retained the title they had won in 2016 by first routing OK Kula GRADAČAC in the semis 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-15) before rallying to another 3-0 victory in the gold medal match against OK Sloboda TUZLA (25-17, 25-19, 25-13). OK Sloboda TUZLA had previously cruised to a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-20, 29-27) in their semi-final with UOK Banjaluka Volej BANJA LUKA. ZOK Bimal-Jedinstvo celebrated their ninth national cup title in history to cement their domination in domestic competitions, with their middle blocker Ana Gajić receiving the award for the Most Valuable Player of the finals.

In the men’s competition, OK Mladost BRČKO were able to retain the crown they had won in 2016 as well. They first claimed the derby with city rivals MOK Jedinstvo BRČKO in the semis 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20) before rallying to another 3-1 victory in the final match with HOK Domaljevac DOMALJEVAC (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15). The eventual silver medallists had previously claimed a close and dramatic semi-final with OK Modriča-Optima MODRIČA 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12). Mladost BRČKO could rejoice with their fourth national cup title in history with outside spiker Jovan Čendić awarded as the MVP of the Final Four tournament.
