First stage of Albanian national league accounts for few surprises

Tirana, Albania, November 29, 2018. The first phase of the Albanian national league has finished – and it did so after producing a number of surprises. After celebrating their comeback to the highest division, Mirdita delivered a series of terrific performances, thus securing the top position in the standing of the women’s competition, while Vllaznia and Erzeni finished the first phase of the men’s championship with the same number of points.

After some players departed earlier this year, women’s reigning champions Partizani are trying to retain their title, but it will not be an easy task to accomplish. The first phase of the championship confirmed that challenge, with the team from Tirana having to be content with fourth place. Better than Partizani did Mirdita, Barleti Volley and Tirana, which took the top three spots at the end of the first phase to compose a ‘virtual’ podium.

Mirdita were the biggest surprise, as they lead the way after the first phase with one point more than Barleti; Tirana finished in third place after leading for most of the time before losing two matches in a row. However, the battle for the title among these four teams will be truly exciting in the second stage of the competition – since they all have lost at least one match this far.

In the men’s championship, the only team to finish the first phase without any loss is Vllaznia Shkodër. They won all of their matches and took the title of winter champions. Vllaznia have the same number of points as reigning champions Erzeni, who finished second, but the winter transfer window can change everything. The teams of Tirana, Skënderbeu and Partizani are also playing well and they will battle hard to reach the playoff stage.

Now, the teams in both categories are preparing to contest the qualification stage of the Albanian National Cup, which will start this coming weekend.
