Historic national league title for Partizani after 38 years

Tirana, Albania, May 5, 2019. After 38 years of waiting, Partizani have claimed top honours from the Albanian men’s national league. The team ‘resurfaced’ two years ago only, and after a lot of hard work and sacrifices, they have managed to skyrocket to the top of the domestic arena.

The team from the Albanian capital needed three matches only to finish the championship series with Vllaznia; they indeed were able to win two matches in Shkodër while playing away from home. Even though Vllaznia enjoyed the home-court advantage, they failed to capitalise on it. The first two matches were very exciting and dramatic, lasting five sets each, before Partizani dominated the third one for a 3-0 victory to seal the title.

Partizani, who ended the regular season in fourth place, slowly but surely made it to the top, eliminating Skënderbeu in the quarterfinals. After that, they edged Erzeni, the former champions, in two games in the semis before capping their amazing run with a historic title in the finals.

“When I started the season, I did not think we would go this far, but gradually the team improved their level. Some youths became the main pillar of the team, while the reinforcements provided another boost of energy and quality. In the last few weeks of the championship and in the playoffs we have been just extraordinary, eventually securing a great title for all of us. 38 years are a long time, and I do not believe yet that we succeeded,” said Ylli Tomorri, Partizani coach.
