Maritza PLOVDIV lift their fourth Bulgaria Cup

Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, December 24, 2017. On the eve of the Christmas holidays, Maritza PLOVDIV triumphed with their fourth national cup, mastering a 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-20) victory over Levski SOFIA in a hard-fought final.

The Bulgaria Cup 2018 tournament took place over three competition days in Stara Zagora with the participation of the top six teams from the National Volleyball League standings at the half-way point of the regular season.

As a table leader, Maritza started their participation directly from the semifinals on Friday, where they delivered a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-23) shutout of Rakovski DIMITROVGRAD, a team that had upset hosts Beroe STARA ZAGORA on the day before, with a five-set defeat.

The other finalist, Levski, emerged from two straight-set wins again city rivals Slaviya SOFIA and CSKA SOFIA, before facing defending cup-holders Maritza on Saturday. The spectators on the packed stands at the Ivan Vazov hall were pleased to see a very tense duel, where the young team of Levski showed a lot of courage against pre-favourites Maritza, but Bulgaria’s representatives in the 2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League put their high class on display and found their way to the victory.

“We are continuing a good tradition,” said a happy Maritza PLOVDIV President Iliya Dinkov after the team lifted the prestigious trophy for the fourth time in history, after 2012, 2015 and 2017. “We saw a nice match with two good teams, so everything is alright.”

“I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, but let’s remember that January 11 is coming very soon,” he added referring to the date of Maritza’s next Champions League game, against Serbia’s Vizura RUMA at home, at the Kolodruma.
