OK HERCEG NOVI celebrate fabulous season with local authorities

by Press 12/05/2023
written by Press

The President of the Herceg Novi Municipality, Stevan Katic, together with his colleagues hosted earlier this week a delegation representing the women’s team of OK HERCEG NOVI, which won the double crown – National Cup and EPCG Superleague of Montenegro – without losing a single set throughout the whole season. It is a feat that is very rare, perhaps the only one in European Volleyball.

President Katic pointed out that by winning the double crown and achieving notable results on the international sports scene, Herceg Novi is slowly becoming the volleyball centre of Montenegro.

“I hope that in the coming period, Volleyball, in addition to water polo, will be the backbone of the development of sports in Herceg Novi. I am glad when I come to your matches and see a lot of spectators, but also that you nurture the youth in the club. The volleyball school you run is fantastic and this way, a good, quality, and healthy atmosphere is created for the future of a well-organised club. This is the only way to achieve long-term success,” said Katic, before stressing that OK HERCEG NOVI will have the support of the Municipality in the coming years as well.

Although this past season his team achieved more than remarkable results, it is only the beginning of a longer journey, and hopefully, there will be more such receptions in the future as well, promised the club’s strategist and head coach of the women’s volleyball team of Montenegro, Milorad Krunić:

“We will do everything, both at the national and regional level, to worthily represent the name of Herceg Novi that we bear. Surely the city will be proud of the girls and the Volleyball Club. I hope that in the coming seasons we will have even more opportunities for joint meetings, not only at the finals of domestic competitions, but at many other events as well.”

Club director Milan Ivanišević also addressed the attendees, pointing out that the previous year was a great experience for the club and the Igalo Sports Centre. He thanked for the support provided by the local administration. “I hope that we will cooperate even better in the coming years, that the Municipality will be with us and that we will jointly spread the name of Herceg Novi across Montenegro and Europe,” said Ivanišević.

The reception with the President of the Municipality was attended by club president Milan Ivanišević, coach Milorad Krunić and members of the coaching staff Sanja Muminović, Srđan Crnojački, and Nikolina Puhalo. Players Nikolina Lisičić, Ivana Dragović, Darija Chabonenko, Diana Balai, Lana Labović, Tijana Tvrdišić, Marija Tuševljak, Polina Liutikova, Lea Boban, and Melisa Cenović were present as well as the Secretary for Social Activities and Sports, Mitar Kisjelica.

VakifBank’s Exceptional Consistency Usually Brings Titles

by Press 12/05/2023
written by Press

The best team in the history of the CEV Champions League Volley will take the court yet again at the SuperFinals Turin 2023, in less than ten days, with at least 50% chance of adding to their record trophy tally. With so much time spent in the spotlight, can VakifBank still surprise in the Final against Eczacibasi Dynavit or will it be the same outlandish consistency that will tip the scale in its favour?

For a team playing its ninth Champions League Final, extending its own record, nothing about VakifBank Istanbul can be considered an unknown. However, as any other team, the Turkish giant has regularly refreshed its roster, the only constant element across these nine Finals being coach Giovanni Guidetti.

The Italian has been at the helm of the team for fifteen years, molding VakifBank year after year into a title contender, both domestically and internationally. In reaching these heights, Guidetti has had help from top talent across the years, being involved in some of the biggest transfers on the market almost every transfer window.

Paola Egonu’s transfer from Conegliano to VakifBank and the reverse, Isabelle Haak’s transfer from VakifBank to Conegliano was by far the biggest transfer saga in recent years. With all eyes on her, yet again, Paola had to deliver, and that’s exactly what she has been doing this season. Top scorer of the competition (235), she has already surpassed the tally of last season’s top scorer, Isabelle Haak (214) wearing VakifBank’s jersey.

Even though she is one of the biggest volleyball stars on the planet, equally outstanding players surround Paola. Amongst them, American Chiaka Ogbogu has been having her own incredible season, dominating the net together with Zehra Gunes and leading the Champions League with most points from kill blocks this season (31).

A pleasant surprise for many this season has been another new addition to the squad, Kara Bajema. The American transferred from DevelopRes Rzesow has impressed immediately, fitting in perfectly into Guidetti’s system and delivering very good performances consistently, culminating with the MVP performance in the return leg of the semifinals against Fenerbahce Opet.

Going into this season, VakifBank had to do without its captain, Melis who decided to retire after last year’s Superfinals. Her replacement, Brazil’s Gabi stood up to the task becoming an absolute pillar of reliability for her teammates throughout the season.

Despite not having the best season by their standards, having had to go through the playoffs to secure their quarterfinals place and recently losing in the semifinals of the Turkish League against bitter rivals Fenerbahce, VakifBank remains the team to beat in the Champions League.

Captain Bošković aims to lead Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul to first CEV Women’s Champions League trophy

by Press 10/05/2023
written by Press

Tijana Bošković had a superb season for Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul, with the Serbian opposite spiker leading the way in the number of points scored in every single game played so far in this season.

Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul had one of their best seasons in history in the CEV Champions League | Women, making the SuperFinals for the first time since the current format has been introduced and having a chance to clinch the trophy for the first time since they won it in the 2014/15 season.

As it is widely known, success is a team effort, but some players do shine during crucial matches and this is what opposite spiker Tijana Bošković did for the Turkish powerhouse this season, confirming her excellent form over the last few seasons, when she was named the CEV Female Volleyball Player of the Year for three years in a row in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Bošković, now the captain of Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul, has been in superb form throughout this campaign for the Turkish side, after being the best scorer in last season’s Women’s CEV Cup, when Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul won the trophy, the second won in major European competitions by the player with the current side, which she has been playing for since 2015.

But right now, Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul had a superb season in the European premium competition, winning nine matches out of the 10 they played, dropping only eight sets on their way to the SuperFinals in Turin and in the business end of the competition, no player has been more crucial than Bošković.

In both quarter-final matches against Developres Rzeszow, Boskovic was the best scorer of the game, with 28 and 30 points respectively. She took that form over into the semi-finals against Italian side Igor Gorgonzola Novara, where she doubled down on what she did in the quarter-finals, becoming the best scorer in both of those matches, with 28 points in the first leg and 11 in the second leg.

But Bošković has been impressive throughout the whole season, being the best scorer in all of Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul’s matches, including the ones in the Pool Phase, an excellent achievement, which underlines the importance of the team’s captain for the Turkish side, a true leader on and off the court, trying to deliver the best performances for a side she has spent almost all her senior career in.

Despite playing only six matches and 24 sets throughout the season in the CEV Champions League | Women, the 26-year-old Serbian opposite spiker scored 153 points, sitting sixth in the best scorer top, but boasting the largest points tally in a per set average, 6.38.

With medals in all the major international competitions she played in, Bošković, a nominee for the All-Star team this season, has surprisingly never played for the trophy in the CEV Champions League | Women, and now her first chance arrives, with the possibility of a big win over domestic rivals VakifBank Istanbul in the SuperFinal in Turin only adding to Bošković’s legacy in volleyball.

Bošković’s challenge will surely be helped by fellow Serbian setter Maja Ognjenović, who is now in the second year of her third stint at Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul, the second alongside the current captain, with the two players delivering excellent games throughout the whole season.
