Olympiacos crowned national champions in Greece

by Press 03/05/2023
written by Press

A truly memorable and highly successful season for Olympiacos PIRAEUS has ended in the best possible way as the ‘Reds’ were crowned men’s national champions for the 31st time in Greek Volleyball history.

After winning the CEV Challenge Cup earlier this season, Olympiacos were again victorious in the final series of the Hellenic Volley League, reclaiming their crown after overcoming PAOK THESSALONIKI by three wins to one in the championship series.

Olympiacos middle blocker, Alen Pajenk of Slovenia, was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season, finishing his campaign strongly in PAOK’s own sports hall with an amazing performance that included 15 points from six attacks, six aces and three blocks, as the ‘Reds’ ended the championship series with a straight-set victory.

It is a historic achievement for Pajenk, who becomes the first middle blocker in the history of the Greek League to be nominated as MVP of the season.

“To be honest I did not expect to win the MVP award because it is quite rare for a middle blocker to be nominated. I dedicate it to the Olympiacos fans, to my teammates and to my coaching staff. What is most important is that we were able to win the championship and finish the season with smiles.”

MVP Alen Pajenk had multiple reasons to celebrate at the end of the championship series

Olympiacos head coach Alberto Giuliani said after winning the championship: “We were the better team, and we deserved the title. The level of the finals was high, and I am happy that we played our best in the most important moment of the season.”

VakifBank Took The Turkish Cup

by Press 03/05/2023
written by Press

VakifBank maintained their title in Turkish Cup after a sensational victory over Fenerbahce.

The final four round of the Turkish Cup took place this weekend: At the semifinals, VakifBank first beat Aydin Buyuksehir Belediyespor in straight sets, and Fenerbahce secured their spot in the final clash by overpowering THY Istanbul after a challenging five-set battle.

In the final battle of this year’s domestic cup, these two elite squads once again faced off. The SuperFinalist and reigning #CLVolleyW champion VakifBank started the match well and took the first set without difficulties. The last two sets, however, were quite competitive. On the other hand, Italian expert Giovanni Guidetti’s team managed to put the ball to the floor and win the match and title by 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 29-27).

Paola Egonu became the top scorer of the match with 25 points and was honored as the MVP. The captain of the winning side, Gabi Guimaraes scored 15, and Turkish middle blocker Kubra Akman stood out with four block points. Turkish opposite Melissa Teresa Vargas (17) and young Arina Fedorovtseva (10) were the players in Fenerbahce who scored in double digits.

This year’s SuperFinalist VakifBank took their first trophy of this season by overpowering Fenerbahce in the national cup’s final; now, they entirely focus on counting more.

#EuroVolleyU17M Final Round in Montenegro to feature 16 teams for first time

by Press 27/04/2023
written by Press

The stars in the making of European Volleyball will contest later this summer from July 19 to 30 the final stage of this year’s #EuroVolleyU17M in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica. The event will feature for the first time in history as many as 16 teams following a decision made by the CEV Board of Administration to provide additional opportunities to Europe’s youngsters to compete at the highest level.

After completion of two qualifying rounds – the first organised by four Zonal Associations in late 2022 and early 2023 and a second run last week across multiple countries – 15 teams have joined hosts Montenegro for the Final Round. The Drawing of Lots held on Wednesday morning at the home of European Volleyball in Luxembourg did define the pool composition as follows:

Teams were divided into seven cups as per the latest European Ranking in this age group and drawn accordingly. Montenegro and Poland were pre-seeded at the top of Pool I and II, respectively, as the host country and the team with the highest ranking among the 16 due to compete in Podgorica.

All teams will contest seven matches in their pool as per the single round-robin format, with the top two from each group progressing to crossed semi-finals and the subsequent medal matches.

his is the third continental age-group championship to take place in Montenegro following an U18 women’s event co-organised with Serbia in 2013 and the final stage of the U17 women’s competition delivered in the early fall of 2020 under very challenging circumstances following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

At the last edition of #EuroVolleyU17M held in Albania two years ago, Slovenia claimed a historic gold medal, with the teams of Russia and Poland completing the podium in Tirana.
