Mini volleyball league resumes in Montenegro with record-breaking figures

by Press 01/11/2022
written by Press

The sixth edition of the EKO mini volleyball league run by the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro (OSCG) has already broken all previous records. The league started on Sunday with participation of 826 children accounting for as many as 68 teams representing 19 clubs from all over Montenegro.

The project designed specifically for children aged 9-13 years old is run by the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro with the sponsorship of the Jugopetrol AD company. The European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Montenegrin Olympic Committee and the City Podgorica all support the programme as well. The main goal is to involve as many kids as possible and popularise Volleyball across the Balkan country.

The Volleyball Federation Montenegro bears all costs related to the matches organisation and delivery. Moreover, through the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’, the OSCG can provide Mikasa volleyballs to the clubs as well as t-shirts for all children participating in the EKO mini volleyball league.

After a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, action resumed on Sunday, with packed stands at the Gymnasium ‘Slobodan Škerović’ sports hall, as OSCG President Cvetko Pajković officially opened the new season.

“The COVID-induced break was too long, but it seems that despite everything, we are getting more numerous, getting stronger, and Volleyball is becoming more and more popular in Montenegro. Over 800 children will participate in the sixth season of the EKO mini volleyball league. Almost 70 teams will compete every weekend with the help of our great friends from Jugopetrol, as well as with the support of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Montenegrin Olympic Committee, and the City of Podgorica. This project specifically designed for girls and boys from 9 to 13 years old is only a small part of the activities run by Montenegrin coaches across the country. Next year, our men’s national team will compete at EuroVolley for the third time in a row, and we are waiting for the first participation of our women’s team in the final stage of the European Championship as well. I am sure that our EKO mini volleyball league is the best possible springboard for the journey taking you to elite Volleyball. Welcome to the Volleyball family, and thank you for being here,” said Pajković to the gathered children, coaches, and parents.

Sara Ivanović Božović, marketing manager of the company Jugopetrol AD, a long-term sponsor of this project, addressed the participants, coaches and parents as well:

“We are most looking forward to the cooperation with the youngest individuals of our community. Their smiles, sincere and new friendships, teamwork and establishing the values of sportsmanship from a young age are of particular importance. We are extremely glad that the project counts an increasing number of children every year.”

Olympic gold medallist and Montenegrin Olympic Committee Secretary General Igor Vušurović, the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Mr Savo Rašović, the President of the OSCG Coaching Commission, Veselin Vuković, as well as national team players Gordana Madžgalj, Luka Babić, Rastko Milenković, and Matija Ćinćur all attended the opening of the EKO mini volleyball league as well.

The Volleyball Federation Montenegro will provide medals for all participants at the end of this season, which is due to finish in May of next year, because, when playing Volleyball, everyone is a winner!

written by Press

The President of the Republic of Serbia, Mr Aleksandar Vučić, announced this past weekend the composition of the newly formed government of the Balkan country, with Zoran Gajić, the President of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia (VFS) since late November 2016, appointed as the new Minister of Sports.

Mr Gajić was born on December 28, 1958, in the city of Pančevo. He holds a master’s degree in Volleyball. From 1988 to 1993, Gajić was an assistant professor for Volleyball at the Faculty of Physical Culture in the city of Novi Sad, from 2000 to 2002 he was a professor of Volleyball at the Faculty of Coaching in Belgrade, and in 2015 he became a Volleyball lecturer at the Faculty of Coaching in Novi Sad.

From 1980 to 1988, Gajić was the head coach in the Volleyball training camp of the Serbian Province of Vojvodina and the head coach of the junior team of the Province of Vojvodina. From 1980 to 1983, he organised and supervised groups of young players aged 9 to 11.

Between 1987 and 1992, he was the coach of the junior men’s national team of Yugoslavia.

As part of his educational work, Gajić has lectured at many seminars in the former Yugoslavia, and subsequently in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Iran, and Hungary, on topics ranging from basic Volleyball techniques to working with top teams.

As the head coach of the senior men’s national team of Yugoslavia, he claimed nine medals – including a historic Olympic gold at the Sydney 2000 Games, followed by a European Championship title a year later in Ostrava (Czech Republic). The resume includes silver medals from the 1998 World Championship in Tokyo (Japan) and the 1997 European Championship in Eindhoven (Netherlands), as well as bronze medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA), the 2001 Grand Champions Cup in Tokyo (Japan), the 2002 World League Finals in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), and the 1995 and 1999 European Championships in Athens (Greece) and Vienna (Austria), respectively.

In addition to the national team of Yugoslavia, which he coached from 1995 to 2002, he was also the head coach of the senior men’s national teams of Russia (2005-2006) and Iran (2007-2008). With the Russian national team, he won gold from the 2005 European League in Kazan (Russia), a silver medal in the 2005 European Championship in Rome and a bronze medal in the 2006 World League Finals in Moscow.

Throughout his club career, Zoran Gajić won eight national championship titles in the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Russia, and Azerbaijan, and three National Cup titles in Yugoslavia, Greece, and Turkey. From 1989 to 1993, Gajić was the head coach of Vojvodina NOVI SAD, winning both the Championship and Cup titles in 1992, and another Championship title in 1993. From 1993 to 1995, he was the head coach of the elite Greek club Aris from Thessaloniki. For two years in a row, in 1994 and 1995, he was the vice-champion of Greece, and in 1995 he participated in the Final Tournament of the CEV Cup Winners’ Cup. From 1995 to 1997, Gajić was the coach of AVC ORESTIADA, playing in the CEV Cup Final Tournament in 1996, and finishing as the runner-up in the Championship and the Greek Cup in 1997. From 1998 to 2000, he coached Olympiacos PIRAEUS, winning both the National Championship and the Greek Cup in 1999, and another Championship title in 2000. He returned to work with ORESTIADA in the 2000-2001 season, finishing fourth in the Greek championship.

From 2002 to 2004, Gajić was at the helm of Arcelik ISTANBUL, winning the title of Turkish Champion and the Turkish Cup in 2003. The following season, he won the national championship title in Russia with Belogorie BELGOROD (where he stayed until January 30, 2005, when he was appointed as the head coach of the Russian national team).

With this very same team, Gajić took third place in the Final Four Tournament of the CEV Champions League in 2009 in Prague. Further to this, he coached Ural UFA from 2009 to 2011 in his latest Russian stint.

In 2011 and 2012, and then from 2014, Gajić was the head coach of the Azerbaijani club Rabita BAKU, achieving the greatest success in the club’s history in 2011, when he became the World Club Champion at the FIVB World Championship held in Doha (Qatar). Bulgarian Volleyball celebrates 100th anniversary with star-studded gala

by Press 18/10/2022
written by Press

More than 200 guests – including the President of Bulgaria, Mr Rumen Radev, FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° and CEV President Aleksandar Boričić – attended the gala organised on Monday by the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation to celebrate 100 years since the introduction of the sport in the Balkan country. Other high-profile attendees were Bulgaria’s Minister of Sports, Ms Vesela Lecheva, a five-time world champion in shooting, and the President of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, Ms Stefka Kostadinova, a 1996 Olympic champion and still the high jump world record holder.

Mr Radev, Dr Graça and Mr Boričić all congratulated the Bulgarian Volleyball family on such a great achievement. BVF President Lubomir Ganev, a former player and a household name in Bulgaria, reminded everyone that Volleyball is the most successful team sport for the Balkan country.

CEV President Aleksandar Boričić addressing the audience at the gala held in Sofia

“These 100 years are some sort of an era for us. There have been dramas, wins, and historic moments. Throughout the years, Volleyball has become a lifestyle for millions of Bulgarians. Therefore, I feel a huge responsibility goes with being the BVF President at this historic moment”, said Lubomir Ganev, president of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation.

The most famous and successful Bulgarian soccer player of all times, Hristo Stoichkov, sent a video message to mark the occasion.

The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation used this gala as an opportunity to announce the names of 88 Volleyball legends inducted into the Hall of Fame of Bulgarian Volleyball. To this date, the biggest success came when the men’s national team finished second at the Moscow 1980 Olympics, where the women’s team claimed a historic bronze. Moreover, Team Bulgaria won EuroVolley Women gold a year later, doing so on home soil. Back in 1991, Bulgaria won gold at the U21 Men’s World Championship in Cairo, Egypt, to account for the country’s only global title in any team sport.

Only a few hundred metres away from the venue that hosted Monday’s gala, in 1957 an international Volleyball tournament took place at Vassil Levski stadium. The event paved the way for Volleyball’s addition to the Olympic programme – which followed at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan.
