CEV Coaches Convention matters: attendees share the experience

by Press 16/09/2022
written by Press

Counting the days until the next edition of the CEV Coaches Convention (16-18 September, Skopje, North Macedonia), we are looking back at the previous editions of the event and “give the online floor” to some of the participants from 2021 and 2019, as they share with us why being at the CEV Coaches Convention is one of a kind opportunity that needs to be seized.

In 2019, the Convention was held in Kranjska Gora, focusing on youth development and participation. The attendees had the chance to listen to insights by Remko Kenter (NED), Kristof De Loose (BEL), Peter Morell (DEN) and Marco Mencarelli (ITA), and reflect together on best ways to work with children.

The event in 2021 took place in again Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and was attended by as many as 164 coaches and physical education teachers from all around the globe. The participants learnt during both theoretical and practical sessions (as they will do in 2022) about new ways to inspire school kids taking up on the sport; and how to train them better on their way to understanding the concept of losing to later winning through self-awareness and correction. Kristof De Loose, Nicolas Sauerbrey, Thomas Bro-Rasmussen, Kåre Mol, and Giovanni Guidetti were the speakers who inspired the attendees.

What to expect from the 2022 edition of the CEV Coaches Convention? Find out here.

“I come from a small region in the east of France. I am a coach of youth players, U17. At the convention, learned many interesting things. It is so interesting and important to meet other youth coaches – you exchange knowledge on how to find new ways to engage with young players. And in my opinion, this is something very difficult, even more difficult than training older players, because with youngsters, you need to find new alternatives to inspire them and to keep their interest. At the Convention, I got to know different points of view. Now, I need to reflect on everything and when coming back to my country, to the gym, try making a difference. It will take a little bit of time “to translate” and implement everything. One thing that I will remember will be the fact how important it is for young players to have fun while they play”, said Samuel Boyé from France.

I come from Albania, from a small town. I am a coach of young girls. Besides this, I used to be a professional Volleyball player and right now, I am also a professor at the University. I was chosen from the Albanian Volleyball Federation to take part in this event. It is a good possibility to learn new things regarding how to train kids. I liked a lot the organisation, the host country, the theoretical session, the whole new experience of the practice session. I think that the most valuable thing for me was seeing how people with great experience do things. The best thing that I will bring with me, is part of the theoretical session about the characteristics of the coach, and that you have to be a kid when you coach the kids. I also got inspired by the creativity the coaches have. They think about practical things – such as finding materials, and create tools on their own and use them during training. You need to be creative, and you don’t need to only spend money. I will implement this in my work”, said  Gentiana from Albania.

“I was invited by the CEV to take part in a grassroot program; to learn how, we, as coaches, can develop youth and grassroot Volleyball in our country. Here, at the Coaches Convention, I liked a lot the networking possibilities, being able to exchange ideas with coaches from around the world.  We have learned from coaches who work with children, with young people for the last 30-40 years – and gathering this knowledge, this is of utmost importance to me, to my other fellow coaches. Even getting ideas from other specialists who have done things differently – that is a great help to me. Something that I would bring together with me to the Dominican Republic, and most probably, I will share with other coaches there – I realised during the practical sessions that you must allow children to be children. First of all, children always like having fun. As a senior coach myself, I have always worked with older people, in some more competitive environment. I train them to win. With children and young people, you help them to develop from early stage – technics, tactics, and just the love for Volleyball. If you don’t allow them to love this sport, you lose these players for the future. To me, if I am working with young people and children, I want to allow them to have fun and to love the game as they get older”, said Ericsson Leblanc from Dominica.

“I am from Armenia, and I am a Volleyball coach. Being here, at the Convention, is a great opportunity for me; I can learn more about the school programs. I will bring with me the knowledge of how important it is to create games between kids, games that they will enjoy while learning. Here, I got many new ideas, many new answers”, said Izabella Asmaryan from Armenia.

Skopje poised to host the 2022 CEV Coaches Convention

by Press 16/09/2022
written by Press

After much successful first two editions of the CEV Coaches Convention in 2019 and in 2021, the time has come for the 2022 event to take place. In less than a month, Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, will play host to 160+ registered attendees – coaches and teachers, who are eager to discuss and share ideas on how to best develop and grow Volleyball in Europe with the younger generations.

The CEV Coaches Convention, a one of a kind event, gathered 157 participants back in 2021 when the CEV together with the Slovenian Volleyball Federation (OZS) provided the chance to 141 teachers and coaches from around the globе to expand their Volleyball knowledge. 2022 will be no different, as numbers have been growing – 153 teachers and coaches have registered to attend the two-day event that will take place from September 16 to 18 in Skopje (MKD).

The Speakers

This year’s edition of the event will feature John Kessel from the USA and Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai from Thailand as keynote speakers. Coming from two different countries with completely different backgrounds, both specialists will share their wide knowledge, inspiring experts who work on grassroots levels. Stay tuned as interviews with them are coming your way!

During the event, and besides the speakers’ sessions, Mr. Kessel and Mr. Radchatagriengkai will also participate in Q&A sessions, practical sessions with the participants and a Coaches tournament.

CEV and the development of Volleyball at grassroot level

The Coaches Convention is a key asset of the CEV School Project. Its format allows coaches and physical education teachers to both learn and share ideas, and network / make connections with like-minded people.

“We, at the CEV, are privileged of being in a position to make positive changes…We would love that the first impression of every child, who is just introduced to Volleyball, inspires the beginning of a hopefully long journey in our sport- as a player, a coach, a referee, a fan…,”  Vuk Karanovic, CEV Development Manager says.

“For that reason, we host the CEV Coaches Convention as a capacity building event, where teachers from all across Europe come together a weekend to learn from some of the best experts in the world on the topic, and exchange experience” , said Vuk Karanovic CEV Development Manager

The Host City

The North Macedonian Volleyball Federation has collaborated successfully with the CEV in the past years, delivering high-class events, and converting themselves in a reliable partner. Now, the organisers are excited to give a warm welcome in “the city of solidarity” to the guests of the CEV Coaches Convention, that will take place at the 5-star Aleksandar Palace Hotel. A huge plus is the fact that the elite sport facilities are within a walking distance, providing an utmost experience for the guests.

“Hosting the CEV Coaches Convention in Skopje is another event which creates recognition of the Macedonian Volleyball Federation on the International Volleyball stage. Earlier this summer, the Federation will host as well the #EuroVolleyU19W, which serves as a built-up to the EuroVolley 2023 where North Macedonia is one of the co-organisers. All these events are strengthening the Volleyball community in Macedonia, raising the visibility of the sport”, said Sanja Nikcevic Project Coordinator.

CEV School Project in North Macedonia

Entering into partnership with CEV for the implementation of the CEV School Project allowed the North Macedonian Federation to raise the level of the Volleyball activities on grassroots level. With the support of CEV, the Federation managed to reach more than 80 primary schools and to involve more than 2000 children in the program together with the local Volleyball clubs. The aim of the project is to make the first Volleyball experience for the kids something to remember.

– To do so, we need to enhance the knowledge of the coaches and teachers, and that’s why events like the CEV Coaches Convention are so important to the North Macedonian Volleyball community – Sanja Nikcevic Project Coordinator.

Zoran Karanović awarded in recognition of a lifetime devoted to Volleyball

by Press 10/09/2022
written by Press

Sometimes he was alone in the Federation, but he never stopped dreaming. Even in the most difficult times, he believed in his convictions and reassured everyone around him that the goals were achievable. This year, his total passion for Volleyball brought him a special acknowledgement from the Macedonian state, which presented him with the ‘8th of September’ award in recognition of his contribution to the development of our sport.

For colleagues in Europe, Zoran Karanović is synonymous with Macedonian Volleyball. Without any doubt, the perception is the same in his homeland. Since the establishment of the Volleyball Federation of North Macedonia as the national governing body after the independence of the Balkan country, Karanović has been the Secretary General for more than 30 years. More specifically, he is the first and so far the only Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of North Macedonia. In this capacity, he has participated in the process of creating a domestic league in the independent Macedonian state, as well as in forming a national team, which in recent years achieved its best results in history with two straight CEV EuroVolley Men appearances.

“I am proud of both stages of my Volleyball career, as a player and as an administrator as well. Personally, it does not matter what my job title is, as long as my work has to do with Volleyball. Therefore, I am happy that my dream has come true and that our national team played twice in the European Championship. They will do so for a third time because my Federation will be a co-organiser of EuroVolley Men next year”, excitedly says Karanović, known by the nickname Karo not only at home, but abroad as well.

He first felt and experienced the magic of Volleyball more than half a century ago when in 1970 he started playing for the club Rabotnicki. Seven years later, he played in the highest division of the former Yugoslavia’s national league for seven consecutive seasons, and between 1974 and 1978, he wore the jersey of the youth and junior national teams of Yugoslavia. He played 72 matches with the national team, won three gold and two silver medals at the Balkan Championships, and was part of the team that finished fifth at the U20 European Championship in Montpellier in 1977. In addition to Rabotnicki, he also played for Strumica and Borec, and after the end of his playing career, he was the coach of Rabotnicki, the very same club where he started his Volleyball journey.

“My experience in Volleyball is from every possible aspect. That is why this award for a meritorious sports administrator is my personal satisfaction for the work and time invested in the past decades. I would like to thank the Youth and Sports Agency for this honour”, says Karo, the man who lives with and for Volleyball. His personal story perhaps best fits the motto of Macedonian Volleyball ‘living the dream’.
