Children enjoy School Project activities run in North Macedonia

by Press 06/03/2024
written by Press

The Volleyball Federation of North Macedonia has further expanded the reach of the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’ across the Balkan country.

Back in mid-February, the sports hall of OU Goce Delchev in the city of Vasilevo did welcome a volleyball festival organised by OK Macedonia Gio under the leadership of physical education teacher Alma Hasanova. About 20 children aged 10-13 participated in the event. They already had some knowledge of the volleyball game, and therefore they did perform drills of a slightly more complex nature than usual.

Later in February, another such event was held in the sports hall of the Gjoce Stojchevski school in Tetovo. This action was run by OK Bami Kor in cooperation with the professor of physical education Milan Ristovski, who is also a volleyball coach. About 30 children aged from six to 10 attended the meeting and had the opportunity to perform interesting exercises for the development of their motor skills, using auxiliary tools such as hoops, ladders, markers, but also performing basic elements of the volleyball game. Some of the exercises were of a competitive nature, which children especially seem to enjoy.

In the coming weeks, school competitions will be organised in North Macedonia, in addition to some other ‘local’ activities. The local Project Manager, Sanja Nikcevic, hopes that the enthusiasm and joy shown by the children and teachers so far will not stop, but on the contrary, their desire to get to know Volleyball will become even greater.

Bulgaria Set To Host Inaugural FIVB Volleyball U17 World Championships 2024

by Press 04/03/2024
written by Press

Following an open bidding process with multiple applicants, Bulgaria and Peru have been awarded the hosting rights for the inaugural FIVB Boys’ and Girls’ U17 World Championships 2024, respectively.

From 17 to 24 August, Peru is set to showcase its new generation of female players on the international volleyball stage. The nation will be aiming for its young talent to emulate the success of their predecessors, the silver medalists at the Olympic Games 1988, in the future.

Following its successful hosting of the FIVB Volleyball World Championships in 2018, Bulgaria will welcome athletes and fans once again from 24 to 31 August. With Bulgaria men’s team claiming silver at the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship 2021, the younger generation of players will battle it out for the championship title in the U17 category.

The host nations of the respective competitions will be joined by 15 youth national teams from all five Continental Confederations, namely:

Girls’ edition: Peru (host), Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Türkiye.

Boys’ edition: Bulgaria (host), Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Italy, Libya, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Tunisia, Uzbekistan.

Due to the CAVB girls’ qualifying tournament, held from 2-7 December 2023, featuring only three teams, instead of a minimum of four, an exception was approved by the FIVB Board of Administration to allocate one qualification place to the champion of the African girls’ qualifier, Egypt, to ensure the principles of universality. The remaining two places have been awarded to the two best fourth-place national teams from the remaining continental qualifiers based on the Girls’ U19 world ranking: Thailand (ranked #5) and Dominican Republic (ranked #13).

The tournaments present an incredible opportunity for this young generation of players to showcase their talents on the world stage. Volleyball’s rising stars will emerge from the U17 World Championships and keep shining in their future sporting careers.

For the first stage of each U17 World Championship, the teams will be divided into four single round-robin pools of four. Their final standings in these pools will determine the starting positions in the single elimination rounds, which include the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals at each level of the playoff bracket. The list of qualified teams and the date of the drawing of lots will be confirmed later in March.

Jedinstvo STARA PAZOVA and Vojvodina NOVI SAD triumph in Serbian Cup Finals

by Press 04/03/2024
written by Press

Jedinstvo STARA PAZOVA have crowned themselves winners of the 58th edition of the women’s Serbian National Cup, thereby claiming their second title in history and the first one since their maiden victory in 2017. On the other hand, Vojvodina NOVI SAD won a record 16th title in the men’s competition, which celebrated this season its 59th edition. The final matches were watched by some 2,500 spectators in the city of Obrenovac.

In the women’s final match, Jedinstvo STARA PAZOVA, which earlier this season made their historic debut in the pool stage of the elite women’s Champions League, defeated the hosts of the tournament, Tent OBRENOVAC, by 3-2 (25-14, 28-30, 14-25, 25-16, 16-14) at the end of an incredibly hard-fought match that lasted for 132 minutes.

In the men’s final, Vojvodina defeated Mladi Radnik POŽAREVAC by 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21) after 121 minutes of play.

Una Vajagić, receiver of Jedinstvo, was named the MVP of the finals in the women’s competition, whereas the same award went to Žarko Ubiparip, receiver of Vojvodina, in the men’s final.

The winners’ trophies were presented to Milica Medved, team captain of Jedinstvo, and Žarko Kisić, team captain of Vojvodina, by Djula Mešter, President of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia and Olympic champion from Sydney 2000, and Ivan Knežević, Secretary General.

Bulgaria joins pool of CEV EuroVolley 2026 Men co-organisers

by Press 28/02/2024
written by Press

The CEV EuroVolley Men will return to Bulgaria in 2026 with the Balkan country due to co-host matches of the premier competition for men’s national team up until the quarterfinals included – just as it did in 2023. Bulgaria has established itself as a real Volleyball hotspot and local as well as international fans can look forward to yet another majestic showdown featuring the top teams from across the continent in about two and a half years’ time. As it happened last year, Bulgaria will be co-hosting one pool, four 8th Final matches and two quarterfinals.

The success story written by the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation and their partners already includes a series of memorable chapters – such as the 2015 edition of EuroVolley Men when Team France were crowned European champions for the very first time in history in front of a sellout crowd at the iconic Arena Armeec in Sofia. Only three years later, Bulgaria co-hosted the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship together with Italy – and in 2021, despite the many constraints brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, CEV EuroVolley Women matches were held with much success in the city of Plovdiv.

Bulgaria joined forces with Italy, North Macedonia, and Israel to deliver a record-breaking 2023 edition of CEV EuroVolley Men and this elite competition will return to the Balkan country in 2026 too, thereby providing the ‘Lions’ with the home-court advantage and international fans with a taste of what Bulgaria has to offer to Volleyball enthusiasts and tourists alike.

“We are delighted to see that Bulgaria seems to have caught the EuroVolley fever and that the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation wishes to host more such high-profile events. We are sure that our flagship championship lies in very good hands and that the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation will help us deliver a high-quality competition in a sustainable way, with a focus on fan engagement.”

Aleksandar Boričić
CEV President

“I am extremely proud and happy about the fact that we will co-host EuroVolley 2026. This tournament is special for everyone. For the first time, the European champion will automatically win a quota for the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. That is why the governing council of our federation expressed their confidence in the proven Italian coach Gianlorenzo Blengini. His contract is long-term, and he will only work with our national team. On behalf of the federation, I can promise that all teams coming to Bulgaria will feel like they are visiting friends. In the last nine years, we have gained a lot of experience in organising major tournaments, and that is why we had the courage to apply again. Work starts today. We will still talk with the state and the municipalities, and together we will determine which city is most suitable to host. I am glad that Romania will also be one of the hosts. Last year, this was the case with North Macedonia. All this shows the good work of the Balkan Volleyball Association. We want our region to become one of the strongest in our sport!” says the President of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, Mr Lubomir Ganev.

As stated by Mr Ganev, Bulgaria joins another already confirmed co-host for the CEV EuroVolley 2026 Men – Romania, with their Balkan neighbour due to deliver the matches scheduled for one of the four preliminary pools. The remaining co-organisers of Europe’s prime competition for men’s national teams will be announced in due course.
