Alba Blaj continues battle for the CEV Cup title in Romania, Novara claimed victory in the first match

by Press 26/03/2025
written by Press

Igor Gorgonzola Novara – CS Volei Alba Blaj 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17)

Igor Gorgonzola Novara took a significant step toward winning the CEV Cup after defeating Alba Blaj 3-1 in the first leg of the final at a sold-out Pala Igor. Lorenzo Bernardi’s squad now needs either a win or a 3-2 loss in the return match on Tuesday, April 1, at 18:00 local time in Romania to secure the trophy. If Alba Blaj wins 3-0 or 3-1, the championship will be decided in a golden set tiebreak.

The first set was evenly matched in the opening exchanges before Novara pulled ahead thanks to an ace from Tolok and a key block by Bosio (12-8). Alsmeier then delivered an impressive service run, stretching the lead from 14-10 to 21-10, including two aces. Tolok sealed the set with two final points, making it 25-12.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Ishikawa capitalized on a great defensive play by Fersino before serving an ace (10-7) and setting up Bosio’s block straight after. Alba Blaj fought back, as Ruban leveled the score at 13-13, but Novara responded with Aleksic’s quick attack. Felix Costa narrowed the gap, but Tolok and Alsmeier stepped up in the crucial moments (23-20). Alsmeier earned set point with a delicate touch before Tolok’s block secured a 25-20 win.

Alba Blaj responded in the third set, determined to stay in the match. Felix Costa fired two aces (5-8), and Novara’s unforced errors allowed the Romanian side to take control. Alsmeier attempted to rally her team with minus 6 points, but Blaj maintained their advantage (15-22). Bernardi made tactical changes, and Mims provided a spark (18-23), but Rotar sealed the set with a decisive diagonal shot for 20-25.

Igor’s response, however, was immediate: in the fourth set, after a balanced start, the Italian side pulled away thanks to an outstanding performance from Mayu Ishikawa and crucial blocks by Federica Squarcini, closing the set at 25-17 and sealing the 3-1 victory.

This result gives Novara a significant advantage ahead of the return match, where winning just two sets will be enough to secure the CEV Cup.

Olympiacos triumphs in thrilling final to secure 11th Greek Cup title

by Press 26/03/2025
written by Press

Last week Olympiacos PIRAEUS claimed their 11th Greek Cup title in spectacular fashion, overcoming Panionios 3-2 in a dramatic final at the packed Lefkovrysi Indoor Sports Hall in Kozani, northwestern Greece. In front of 2,500 passionate fans who created an electrifying atmosphere, Olympiacos showcased their resilience, battling back twice from behind to secure the coveted trophy.

The final was a true Volleyball showpiece, with both teams delivering a high-level performance that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Olympiacos demonstrated incredible mental fortitude, overturning deficits and sealing the match with a thrilling fifth-set victory.

Serbian opposite Milica Kubura was the undisputed star of the night, earning MVP honours after scoring an impressive 29 points. This marks her second MVP award this season, following her standout performance in the Greek Super Cup.

This triumph is Olympiacos’ second title of the season after winning the Super Cup, and the club now sets its sights on the Greek Championship. With the ultimate goal of securing the historic ‘Triple Crown’, the team remains determined to make history by claiming all three domestic trophies in a single season.

Their men’s team achieved a historic feat this season as well – progressing to the quarterfinals of the elite CEV Champions League Volley for the first time in 23 years, where they lost to Poland’s standout JSW JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel.

Alba Blaj set up third do-or-die clash against an Italian opponent in the CEV Volleyball Cup Women final

by Press 20/03/2025
written by Press

For the third time in the last seven seasons, the final of the CEV Volleyball Cup Women will feature Romanian side CS Volei Alba Blaj against an Italian side. After Blaj conceded two losses against Yamamay Busto Arsizio in the 2018/19 season and against Savino Del Bene Scandicci in the 2022/23 season, Blaj will face Igor Gorgonzola Novara.

Novara had six wins in the previous seven matches in the current season of the CEV Volleyball Cup Women, with the only loss coming against Turkish side Kuzeyboruspor in the play-offs.

Therefore, Novara were extra careful before the second leg of the semi-final against another Turkish side, THY Istanbul, despite winning the first leg, 3:0. And they made no missteps, despite being tested by their opponents, especially in the first set.

Novara led throughout the first set and eventually clinched it, 27:25, despite having a lower attacking efficiency than THY. With Tatiana Tolok (15 points) and Mayu Ishikawa (10 points) in fine form, the Italian side clinched the next two sets, 26:24 and 25:18, leading from start to finish.

“I am very happy with the result, we knew it would be a tough match against a strong opponent, who can boast a top roster and many top players. I expected a battle, as it was, in the first set from 21:24 we made a few mistakes seeing them make a comeback, but then we had the ability to close and in the second the same thing happened. Then with the result in hand we completed the work in the best way. Now we will start studying Blaj, our next opponent, because playing a final is always something beautiful and important. Then we will see what the court will say,” said Novara’s coach, Lorenzo Bernardi.

The Italian side has already won the CEV Champions League Women once, in the 2018/19 season, as well as the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup Women in the 2023/24 season, while also having the CEV Volleyball Cup Women in their trophy cabinet, securing it in the 2002/2003 season.

For another European trophy, their fourth in history, Novara will have to beat Alba Blaj, the Romanian side which had already played four European finals, losing all of them. Blaj had previously  won the first leg against Vasas Óbuda Budapest, 3:2, last week and now they delivered a pitch perfect performance to reach the final.

After taking the first set, 25:18, Blaj needed to mount comebacks in the second and third sets, but cheered by over 2,000 fans in their arena, the Romanian side rode the wave, as Amelie Rotar had 20 points, while Yelyzaveta Ruban added 14 points, for a 25:22 win in the second set and a 25:21 win in the third set.

From Japanese anime to playing Japan: The Volleyball dreams of Montenegro’s rising star Vukota Čelebić

by Press 03/03/2025
written by Press

Vukota Čelebić is a 15-year-old rising star from Budva and the best middle blocker of the Winter Nations Cup recently held in Pordenone, Italy, where Montenegro’s U16 national team secured second place.

The significance of competing in an international tournament and measuring strength against highly competitive national teams is best demonstrated by the example of the Montenegrin U16 men’s national team. This is even better illustrated by the words of 15-year-old Vukota Čelebić, the best blocker of the Winter Nations Cup, which took place last week in Pordenone, Italy.

“We saw how good we really are!”

If it were not for the matches against Hungary and Czechia (both 3-0 victories) or the two losses against Japan in the group stage (2-3) and in the final (0-3), perhaps the young squad led by Miljan Bošković would not yet be fully aware of their true potential. Montenegro secured second place in a highly competitive tournament, thereby exceeding their own expectations, but not their abilities.

“We played amazingly, much better than we expected. In some of our own discussions, we thought we might only manage to beat Vojvodina, and when it came to the matches against Czechia and Hungary, we had no expectations in terms of results – just to fight and give our best. After all, these are big nations with a huge volleyball base, and we saw them as favourites. But we crushed them both 3-0! It was a similar story with Japan – a true Volleyball powerhouse. We lost to them narrowly in the group stage, in five sets. By the time we reached the final, we were already exhausted. We relied on a smaller group of players, with six of us carrying most of the load, and we simply did not have the freshness to play another match at that same level,” says Čelebić.

The Winter Nations Cup has opened new horizons.

“Now, we are already thinking about the European Championship qualifiers. We are considering how good, prepared, and confident we are to secure a spot in the final tournament. We have the quality, that is now clear,” he stresses.

Čelebić is only 15 years old, yet he is already a key player for Budva’s cadet, junior, and even senior teams. He plays many minutes in the EPCG Superliga matches, where Budva is defending their double crown. He returned from Pordenone with the award for the tournament’s best blocker, filled with confidence but, as he says, with the same mindset he had before.

“I would not want this award to change me, and I am sure it won’t. I am firmly grounded, I want to keep going, to play in even bigger tournaments and win even greater awards!”

In Budva, he has everything he needs. “Honestly, I did not expect to get this much playing time at my age. I really appreciate that Budva invests so much in its youth categories. Our goal is to win the title and defend the double crown. Budućnost will be a strong rival as they have strengthened their squad and brought back Montenegrin senior national team player Ivan Zvicera, but I still believe we are the better team. I will be satisfied if I continue contributing the way I have so far.”

Vukota’s beginnings are quite interesting. It wasn’t long ago, in his hometown of Cetinje, that he fell in love with Volleyball, but he had everything except a club. “I have loved Volleyball since I was little, but I had to wait for a club to be formed. Luckily, that happened in 2022. I played one season for Lovćen, and then coach Miljan Bošković noticed me and invited me to join Budva. I have been here since September 2023.”

Even though there was no volleyball club in Cetinje, Vukota still became deeply attached to the sport in a rather unique way. “All my friends used to watch Japanese animated films or cartoons, whatever you want to call them, especially Haikyu. One of them tells a story about Volleyball ‘To the Top’! I watched it and fell so in love with Volleyball that I told myself I had to start training.”

From Japanese anime to the final against Japan, recently played in Pordenone. “I have always wanted to play against big teams, and my wish came true in Italy. Japan is a real Volleyball powerhouse and one of the countries I would love to play in one day. Their discipline and work ethic impress me. I enjoyed playing both matches, and I hope to get the chance again soon, both for me and my teammates.”

Team Montenegro claimed a sensational second place at the Winter Nations Cup held in Pordenone, Italy

Vukota Čelebić is also connected to Volleyball through TV screens. “I follow everything closely. My favourite player is Flavio Gualberto, a Brazilian middle blocker who plays for the Italian team TRENTINO Volley. Among our players, I really like Montenegro national senior player Matija Ćinćur, who was with me in Budva until last season and is now in Slovenia. I can say he has motivated me to become even better.”

Vukota does not neglect school; on the contrary, he is an excellent student at the Danilo Kiš Secondary Mixed School, where he is currently in the first year. His dreams are not only sports-related.

“I have both Volleyball and academic goals, and I want to achieve them. I believe that by the age of 18 or 19, I could become a member of the Montenegrin senior national team. Nothing will stop me on that path!” he concludes.
