Masonicic: Our goal is to go one step further

by Press 16/03/2022
written by Press

Women’s Volleyball team Montenegro will try to achieve their first appearance at the Euro Volley this year. In the qualifiers that will be played in August and September, their opponents will be National teams of Czech Republic, Finland and Iceland.

“We got a group similar in quality as in the previous Qualifiers. Czech Republic is absolute favorite of our group. Finland was also with us in group in last Qualifiers and they won agains us two times, but we showed in both matches that we have quality to play against them. Iceland National team is honestly the weakest in our group and victories against them should not be questioned”, said Nikola Masonicic head coach of women’s National team Montenegro.

Masonicic has only one wish…

“For us, the most important thing is that all players are healthy, because we had a lot of problems with injuries in the previous Qualifiers. With a good preparation plan, I hope that we will be able to go one step further than the previous Qualifiers and I am glad that most of the players in second part of club season played good and standard in their clubs “, concludes Masonicic

The placement at Euro Volley 2023 will be won by the first-placed and second-placed teams from all six qualifying groups.

Panathinaikos regain Women’s National Cup title in Greece after 12 years

by Press 14/03/2022
written by Press

Heraklion, Greece, 12 March 2022 – It’s been a long time coming, but historic Panathinaikos Athens are back in the business of collecting trophies, claiming the Women’s Greek Cup for the sixth time in the history of the competition but for the first time in twelve years, after coming back from a set down to defeat Thira 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-15).

It was Penny Roga who played a pivotal role in Panathinaikos’ triumph as the 34-year-old became the first ever libero in the history of the competition to collect the prestigious MVP award.

“It still hasn’t sunk in,” said Roga after picking up her individual award. “I’ve been through tough years with Panathinaikos and today’s award is recognition. Libero’s are not usually in the limelight and despite doing all the ‘dirty work’, its the spikers and scorers who get all the spotlights. I’m so happy that my first Cup title comes alongside the MVP award.”

But Panathinaikos’ international trio of Canada’s Jennifer Cross, Azerbaijan’s Margarita Stepanenko and the Netherlands’ Maret Grothues each scored 14 points as Greece’s Eva Chantava emerged her side’s best scorer on 16 points.

Cross was difficult to get past in the middle, contributing six blocks and produced a powerful attacking efficiency of 54% (7/13) – second only to Panathinaikos’ other middle blocker Irini Hatziefstratiadou who attacked for 58% (7/12).

“I cannot even describe the emotion,” said 27-year-old Hatziefstratiadou after the match. “Since the very start of the season we had set winning the Cup as one of our goals. Panathinaikos is here to stay and I would like to thank our fans who follow us wherever we may travel.”

Thira outside hitter Symone Abbott of USA was top scorer of the final on 20 points but that was hardly enough for the Santorini club to claim their first ever title, after losing in the final for the third time running.

Earlier in the competition, Panathinaikos had knocked out Ilysiakos Athens 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-21) in the semifinal of the Final Four, held here in the capital of Crete over the weekend and themed on a call to end the war in Ukraine, as volunteers and players alike sported t-shirts in support of the peace effort.

Thira had previously spectacularly come back from 19-24 down in the first set to defeat Thetis of the Voula suburb of Athens 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 27-25, 25-20) in the other semifinal.

The Men’s Cup Final Four, featuring defending Cup holders PAOK Thessaloniki, Foinikas Syros, Olympiacos Piraeus and Pegasus of the Thessaloniki suburb of Policnhe will be held over the 2-3 April weekend.

The Next Big Thing in Volleyball: Alexander Nikolov

by Press 14/03/2022
written by Press

If you follow Volleyball for years, then you remember the name of Vladimir Nikolov – the legendary Bulgarian opposite, part of the Golden generation of the country’s men’s national team. However, in the past year, another Nikolov called the attention of the specialists. Alexander, the oldest son of Vladimir, became a vice-world champion with the U19 national team. 17-year-old by that time, Alexander grabbed the award for Best Outside Hitter as well, and then participated in the Worlds U21, where Bulgaria finished sixth. Nikolov didn’t disappoint, recording as many as 125 points to his name (4th in the best scorers ranking).

Former player of VC Levski Sofia, Alexander is now gaining experience at the college league of the USA, where he continues his education, while competing for
Long Beach State University Athletics. Nikolov is not leaving any doubts of his great potential, as in the beginning of February he was named Freshman of the week for three weeks in a row. Get to know him now, as he might very well be The Next Big Thing in Volleyball.

The Beginning

Born in 2003, he started training Volleyball in 2010, in Busca, near Cuneo, where his father was competing at the time.

“I have been ‘wandering’ between the sports halls for as long as I can remember. So, I basically don’t remember my first steps, but it was in Busca where I had my first training season with a team”, said Alexander Nikolov.

Going Pro

Standing at 205 cm tall, Nikolov has always dreamt of being a professional athlete. However, it took him some time before deciding he would follow his father’s steps, and that Volleyball would be his career path.

“At first I wanted to be a Volleyball player, then a Basketball player, but then I came back to my first decision: Volleyball. I believe it was the correct one, imagine being a football player at the my heigh. It would have been interesting!”, Nikolov says, smiling.

The young outside hitter has had the luck of working with some great professionals. He is thankful for bringing with himself all the advices that he has received.

“I can’t recall the best advice that I have received. From each of my coaches, I remember something that I consider important when it comes to building a character of a champion.”

The National team

Last year, team Bulgaria achieved incredible success at the U19 World Championship, grabbing the silver medals and stunning the Volleyball world, positioning this young generation of “Young Lions” as a very promising one. Some months after this achievement, the best outside hitter of the tournament, Nikolov still remembers the emotions and the excitement of the success.

“I will never forget these emotions, no matter how much time passes. These are unique moments that don’t happen many times in life. A lot has been achieved, and I am really grateful for the support we’ve received from the Bulgarian supporters. I can’t wait to wear Bulgaria’s jersey again this summer”, said Alexander Nikolov.

Speaking about his big dreams related to the national team, the young Nikolov shows great motivation, aiming high.

“I dream of the Olympic gold!”, Alex says.

The USA experience

After the season with the underage national teams, Nikolov took on another challenge. Flying over the ocean, he landed directly to the college league of the USA, where he plays for the university of Long Beach. Three times Freshman of the week, he is trying to improve day by day in his new Volleyball adventure.

“The USA is a difficult but very intriguing challenge! I like that I play Volleyball at a high level, but also that I am able to study during the time when I’m not in the gym. I feel in place, and the experience I gain, is different from all the other before that.”

Outside the court

Outside the court, Alex is a normal boy who describes himself as “a fun and a loyal friend”, whom all his relatives can turn to for help.

“I value a lot honestly and loyalty!”, Nikolov finishes.

And if the Volleyball society can be perceived as one big family, then the current and future teammates of Alexander can for sure count on the rising star of Bulgarian Volleyball to help them through the difficult moments on the court.

Halkbank starts countdown to #CEVChallengeCupM finals

by Press 14/03/2022
written by Press

In a few days only, Halkbank ANKARA will contest their third European final in history when they play NARBONNE Volley of France for the title of this year’s CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup. The team from Turkey’s capital city previously claimed the CEV Cup crown in 2013 and a year later lost the gold medal match of the CEV Champions League to Russia’s standout Belogorie BELGOROD. Halkbank will be hosting the first round of the Challenge Cup finals on March 15 – before the return fixture follows a week later in France.

“I am very happy to be the first team to qualify for the CEV Challenge Cup final after securing the BVA Cup title. Every member of the team has put in a lot of effort since the start of the season to make it to the final. We reached the final by edging past a number of strong opponents”, said Taner Atik head coach of Halkbank.

Halkbank qualified for this year’s CEV Challenge Cup only after securing the BVA Cup title at the very beginning of the current season. “I think that my team, which has showed a great performance in both the Efeler League and the CEV Challenge Cup this season, deserves to be the champion in the end. There is one last step left, but this step will be the most difficult one. Despite this, I have a lot of confidence in my team. The synergy among the players, and the experience and culture of Halkbank Sports Club playing in such finals are our greatest strengths. We have worked hard to reach the final and this team deserves to be the eventual champion,” Atik adds.

Yiğit Gülmezoğlu, outside hitter of Halkbank and a member of the Turkish national team as well, is spending his first season with the club: “We have been working really hard this season to reach our goal – which is bringing the Challenge Cup to Ankara. We will do our best to win the first match in Ankara in front our fans and we hope to show some good Volleyball.”
